Updating NISS with AIMA

  • If you already have a NISS, go to https://contactenos.aima.gov.pt/contact-form, select "Alteração de dados (para atendimento presencial)" and then "Retificar ou inserir Número de Identificação de Segurança Social (NISS)", and follow the instructions provided. As of today, it's finally possible to update your NISS even if your residence card is expired or within four months of expiry—this wasn't allowed before.
    You'll need to upload your passport, residence card, and NISS confirmation letter. I successfully submitted the form using Firefox—you may encounter issues if you're using Chrome or if you switch the site language to English.

Getting Número de Identificação da Segurança Social (NISS)

  Where: Loja de Cidadão do Saldanha
  Time: 2:00pm
  Took a ticket for Espaço de Cidadão, selected “cidadão estrangeiro”, waited about 10 min
  Documents needed:
  *Residence Card and US passport
  *He kept asking if my residence card had my up to-date address. Mine does. (Don’t know if/how that matters in the process if your address is not correct.)
  I also used that opportunity to get my digital chave. Since my theory in Portugal is “get everything you can when they make it available because one day they will change the process and you won’t be able to get it ever again”
  Now what:
  They said I’ll be emailed in 10 days and I have to come back in with that email and they will give me the NISS
