Other notes
Sixth Sense - The character has an uncanny sixth sense that sometimes warns him of
danger. Whenever a hidden danger or ambush is about to occur, make a secret Onerous (7) Cognition check. Fate has nothing to do with it, so don’t worry about the fact that the hero can’t use Fate Chips to affect the roll. If he is successful, he knows something’s up and can react accordingly.
Background
Pay: $75 per month
Short form: In his late 40s. Originally from Ireland. Came to America, eventually became a priest in St Louis and came out West.
Information he doesn't share, other PCs won't know it at the start, shared here for player interest if they want to read it:
Born around 1830. Came from Ireland at the tail end of the potato famine (1848). On arriving in New York, he got mixed up with another man's wife. The gentleman found out, there was a confrontation, and the gentleman ended up dead. Michael fled out west to St Louis, sleeping with one eye open, and then farther into the frontier. On the frontier, he raised all kinds of hell - he was involved in several robberies and "self-defense" shootings.
While out wandering from town to town, he woke up one morning after a night of carousing with a pain on his chest. Looking in the mirror he saw a fresh brand of a gallows post over his heart. He tossed it off as the leftovers of a night crazier than most, until he heard about the bloody mess left of the Indian who was staying in the next room down. That scared him and he got out of town quick. It wasn't the last time he woke to find out about a gruesome death the previous night, a night he couldn't remember. Often those mornings, the scar would burn and at least once he was covered in blood. Sometimes those poor dead people died in ways that suggested no man could have killed them . He started to wonder if he was going mad. Robbing people and fighting with (and maybe killing) someone who pissed him off was one thing, but this was way beyond that.
At some point he was arrested and was in jail, charged with robbing a stagecoach. Something, or a group of somethings, raided the town he was in and Michael was saved by the intervention of a priest, which set him on the path of righteousness. By the time it was all over, he was out of jail and committed himself to the faith of his childhood. He headed back to St Louis and attended seminary. Never a very good student, he barely squeaked through, but eventually he was ordained and headed West once again.
The scar hasn't hurt since that last night in jail - maybe God healed whatever was wrong, or maybe giving up alcohol and his past were the key, or maybe something was following him out there and lost him when he went back east. But Michael fears that somehow he's responsible and somehow this ain't over yet.
Worst Nightmare
I'm leading Mass. Men in dust stained black dusters come in; they're indistinct but their eyes are blank white. They sit in the back pews. When the time comes, I begin giving communion and the men come forward. Each one is a man that I shot. I stumble through the blessings, getting worse with each one. After I finish communion, they men are sitting in the front row of pews. After communion, I finish the Mass quickly. As I speak the last words, "Ite, missa est" the men stand as one, draw guns, and shoot me dead.
Relations with other townspeople
- Friends
- Bartender at the saloon. The Father can sometimes convince people to let it go before a fight breaks out, either by words or by staring them down. Probably has a clue that Father Michael has violence in his past, but nothing concrete. He'll stick up for the Father a little, and the Father sticks up for him.
- Vicente and Gabriella Moreno plus kids. A Mexican family working a small farm outside of town. They took me in when I first was coming to town and arriving late. Devout Catholics
- Possible "enemies"
- Protestant businessman who doesn't like "those damned idol worshippers"
- different saloon owner who doesn't like that I don't drink, etc
